The Under 10 age group plays contact rugby with the emphasis at this age being on enjoyment as detailed within the RFU continuum for youth rugby. Children are eligible to play in this age group if they are under ten years old on 1st September 2007. Matches are played between two teams made up of 9 players each, and the object of the game is to score a try worth 5 points.Out of those 9 players, 3 play as forwards and take part in scrums and line outs whilst the remaining 6 form the back-line.

The game is played with a size 4 match ball on a pitch measuring a maximum 60m x 35m, plus 5m for each in-goal area. Single matches are allowed to last up to 15 minutes each way, with triangular fixtures up to 10 minutes each way. Tournaments are limited to 6 minutes each way.In the under 10’s game, there is no kicking, no hand-off or fend-off, and no fly hacking (kicking a loose ball on the ground). Scrums, rucks and mauls are full contact along with tackling, with the line out being fully contested, but there is no lifting allowed.

The RFU strongly recommends the wearing of mouth guards, correct kite marked studs, and shin guards, but it is the opinion of the U10 coaches that these items are mandatory. We would also suggest that serious consideration is given to the wearing of head protectors (“helmets”) and body protectors. We currently have healthy numbers in our squad, and play two teams of equal ability called ‘Lions’ and ‘Tigers’, however we will always welcome any youngster who is interested in playing rugby.
