 ClubRugby Football Union Award2010-02-09 11:33:17
Congratulations to Mike Wildgoose, who received his award from Nigel Redman (ex Bath & England) at the AK Sportsman?s Dinner in January.
Over the last few seasons Mike has taken on responsibility for the organisation of AK?s three main social events of the year, namely the Firework Display, the Sportsman?s Dinner and the End of Season Ball. Through his efforts over ?100,000 has been raised, which has obviously greatly assisted the clubs financial position and development on and off the field in that period.
Over the last seven years Mike has also organised what he terms his ?Challenges?, in support of The Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. Those of us who have taken part in those events, will no doubt agree that ?challenge?, is a very apt description, as they have included:
? The Yorkshire 3 Peaks: a 26 mile ?ramble? to be completed within 12 hours, with 5000ft of ascents, and just to add a bit more pain for those of us with wobbly knees these days, 5000ft of descents on the way!
? The Sandstone Trail: a 34 mile ?stroll? through Cheshire, which most people take a long weekend over, but Mike has to complete in a day!
? Various bike rides up and down the Trans Pennine Trail between Barnsley and Southport, with anything up to 100 miles completed in a day. Just ask John Bingle about what the result of no cycle training beforehand and a razor sharp seat had on his posterior! Poor lad couldn?t sit down again for a week!
You could write a book about some of the ?incidents? that have happened on the ? Challenges? to date, but my personal memory will always be seeing so many participants looking so absolutely ?cream crackered? at the end of them, to the extent that they didn?t even have the energy to have a bit of a ?session? afterwards. Of course there are always exceptions to that rule, namely Big Bad Bill Dutton and Mike ?I drink zider? Lambert. However the pain has definitely been worth it, as these Challenges have also raised in total over ?100,000 in sponsorship for Christies.
Therefore I am sure that everyone will agree that the recognition of Mike?s efforts by the RFU was richly deserved.
