2010/02/06 Altrincham K v Blackburn (re-arranged fixture)
(Home) (L) W 24-6
Match Report from Alec Forbes:
Although Altrincham Kersal went on the offensive from the kick off and kept play mainly in the Blackburn half, it was the visitors who were first to get points on the board when their
scrum half Paul Bleasdale slotted a penalty. But Kersal's scrum half, Peter Nicholls, went one better when he touched down for a try after a slick back movement which started at a penalty line out. Chris Stewart's conversion and a try by hooker John Geddis gave Kersal a 9 point lead. And with the Kersal second row forwards, Will Harrison and Mike Marsden, dominating, it wasn't long before Geddis was driven over again from a line out 30 yards out, to get his second touch down. Bleasdale's second penalty and some hard running by the Blackburn threequarters, especially winger Seta Kolinisau gave them hope but a try by Stewart to add to his two conversions sealed the victory for Kersal
While the winning margin was less than when the two clubs last met, it was enough to keep Kersal in third place in the league.
Match report from www.pitchero.com/clubs/blackburn: A rejuvenated Blackburn give promotion chasing AK a run for their money: Well, who?d have thought it. An enforced 6 week lay-off, the resignation of our coach and a Welshman taking over the reins, players? meetings, a couple of new faces and guess what, the lads put in their best performance of the season by a country mile. Blackburn, for the first time this season, took the lead, and managed to enjoy the experience for quite a while. It was quite a revelation to see time and time again our forwards winning good, clean ball and the backs linking well and running onto the pass. For a team lying 3rd in the league AK showed little ambition relying on their kicking game and their well drilled lineout catch and drive which accounted for 3 of their tries, but on another day they may well have been penalised for having blocking players in front of the ball carrier before the drive started( a mere technicality), although this should not detract from the fact that AK would have won this bruising encounter anyway. The miraculous change in performance and attitude could easily be summed up in the half time huddle where there was a general consensus that we were disappointed to be 12 -6 down.
The second half continued just as the first with the visitors tackling like demons, covering every blade of grass (and patch of mud) on the pitch and enjoying large chunks of possession. Blackburn?s feisty hard-edge was epitomised by number 8 John Ashworth who took on both his opposite number and blind side flanker and ex Blackburn player Dan Smith. Even the yellow carding of flyhalf Michael Jones could not dampen this rejuvenated group of players. A great performance by one and all.
