About us

Altrincham Kersal RFC is one of the most progressive and ambitious rugby clubs in the North West of England. In the last 12 seasons, the club, at 1st XV level, has risen from level 10 to its current level 6 after recently enjoying four years at level 5. Having finished a respectable 4th in North 2 West in 2008/09 it is very much the goal for the 2009/10 season to gain promotion into National Division 3 (North) with the eventual goal of playing in the National Leagues.

Despite this rapid elevation up the leagues, the club still maintains the values of a traditional rugby club in a true ‘family’ atmosphere. We have an excellent coaching structure for both backs and forwards and specialist coaches are regularly invited from Sale Sharks when required. In fact, we benefit from an excellent 2-way relationship with Sale Sharks. Ex AKRFC players Mark Cueto and Chris Jones have progressed through Sale to England and, in Mark’s case, on to a British Lions cap. A number of our juniors have also gone on to play for the Sale Jets.

The club currently benefits from the coaching services of Dylan O’Grady (ex Sale Sharks and Ireland) into his second season, Joe Clark (ex Sale Sharks and Bridgend) and Andrew Daldry (ex Altrincham Kersal RFC 1st XV). Manager of Rugby Chris Smith is in his 13th year and is delighted with the new coaching structure as it will benefit all players, be them backs or forwards. The club is also delighted to be one of the few able in the locality to run four men’s teams in the competitive league structure and it is also the ambition of these teams to push hard for promotion in 2009/10.

Altrincham Kersal RFC benefits from one of the strongest Mini and Junior sections in the North West of England with over 300 playing members. Last season, the Cheshire Cup was won by the Under 19’s (Senior Colts) with the Under 17’s (Junior Colts) reaching the Cheshire Plate Final. The Under 19’s achieved the greatest success in Altrincham Kersal’s Colts history winning the Halbro Colts A League (against the top senior colts sides in Lancashire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire and North Wales), together with the League Cup and Cheshire Cup. Another great season for the Mini and Junior section following success in the Cheshire Cup for the Under 17’s (Junior Colts) and Under 19’s (Senior Colts) the previous year with the Under 13’s and Under 15’s losing their respective Cheshire Cup Finals.

If you are an overseas player considering joining an English club, please contact us. Over recent seasons, many overseas players have enjoyed playing at Altrincham and have been able to find suitable employment and recommended accommodation.

All abilities and levels are catered for with the 4 Senior Men’s XV’s. Players who are considering taking up the game having not played for many years or who are extremely experienced are most welcome. Please feel free to contact Chris Smith, Manager of Rugby (07976 868444) to discuss your future rugby playing career.

The playing facilities are excellent with modern training equipment and physiotherapy staff present at all training sessions and matches. The club also has a long-standing social tradition with regular events, a sportsman’s dinner and the now infamous end of season ball. Join our success, click here
